Our Chaplain

Chaplain from 2008 – 2012

Rev. Victor (Vic) Dunton and his wife Nancy have followed the Lord to help replant a Christian community at Liberal.

In his first message to the congregation, Vic shared some interesting paths the Lord led them on:

Vic met Nancy at Cascade College. They married in 1963 and graduated together in 1965.

While going to Nazarene Theological Seminary, they planted a church at Excelsior Springs (north of Kansas City).

After graduation they were youth pastors in Spokane. Vic did graduate work in counseling at Whitworth College.

Became youth pastors at College Church in Nampa, Idaho. Nancy was head resident in a girl’s dorm at Northwest Nazarene University.

Became ministers of youth and education at Hillcrest Nazarene in Vancouver. Vic worked on a Master’s in Theology at Western Conservative Baptist Seminary in Portland. (Now it is called Western Seminary.)

They enjoyed two years at a Bible College in Trinidad (in the Caribbean). Nancy served as librarian and Vic was Dean of Students. There he began a word study of Peter’s letters.

In the early 1980s they pastored a church plant in Willamette and Vic completed a Master’s in Mission degree at Western Evangelical Seminary.

They then were asked to pastor a church in San Juan, Puerto Rico. They enjoyed four years there. Nancy hosted over 350 overnight guests. Vic did some graduate work in Educational Administration at the New York University extension campus.

They also pastored in New Zealand for two years. Some of the work involved relocating the church and parsonage and building a new facility on five acres. Vic started an extension campus for the New Zealand Bible College in Hamilton. He also started work on his Doctorate in Missions, which he completed in 1993.

In 1998 they were asked to pastor the Nazarene church in Mt Waverley, Melbourne, Australia. Again they had a building project to complete and Vic did some teaching at the Bible Seminary in Brisbane.

After over three decades of service, they returned to the family farm in Eldorado (near Mulino) but Vic has continued to fill pulpits as needed.

They have two grown children and four grand children.

This new phase in their ministry at the Evangelical Community Chapel is actually a homecoming. Pastor Vic literally grew up in the community of Liberal, Oregon and in this church. Interestingly, this church was founded by his Great-grand uncle. He has strong family ties to this community and enjoys spreading the good news God’s powerful and amazing love.

Since we have recently withdrawn from the Evangelical Church of North America to become an independent church, we now feel compelled by God’s love to reexamine His Word, look at our community with His eyes, obey as He leads, be Christian and be a part of His Church that pleases Him.
